Rush

Postby thetap » 03 Jun 05, 5:30 am

To be honest, I'm hoping to find some sympathy here. I know some of you are Canucks. ;)

Only few months ago, I found out about a band called Rush. It took me a while to get to like any of their material, but I made the effort because it was Progressive Rock and I knew it wouldn't come easy, if ever. ;)

Being a bass player myself, I was utterly blown away by the rythym section (bass and drums) - which why I made an effort to get to know them. Normally I don't pay too much attention to stuff that is post-70s. There's too many geniuses before that point (and too many wankers afterwards, with notable exceptions, of course).

Anyway, I don't much like the stuff they did after about '82, but do any of you like their stuff?

As a bass player, my idol was Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), who's a phenomenal rock bassist, but Geddy Lee is something else altogether. And he sings at the same time.

Oh yeah, almost forgot - I really liike this band. Anybody else here like Rush?

Very much so! I'm impressed with a lot of their lyrics too.

And the men who hold high places
Must be the ones to start
To mould a new reality
Closer to the heart

The blacksmith and the artist
Reflect it in their art
Forge their creativity
Closer to the heart

Philosophers and ploughmen
Each must know his part
To sow a new mentality
Closer to the heart

You can be the captain
I will draw the chart
Sailing into destiny
Closer to the heart

These lyrics were written by neil peart and peter talbot and were set to music by geddy lee and alex lifeson

The Trees
by Rush

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream 'Oppression!'
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe and saw

yeah Rush is a good band and Iron Maiden is badass, but what other bands are in the Rush genre? I always thought that the closest big name band like rush would be styx. am I wrong?

I think King Crimson is probably the closest, but being progressive rock there's plenty of bands in that category, and few of them are really alike.

I've heard that modern bands like Tool and Dream Theatre list Rush (and Pink Floyd) as major influences.

*shrug*

I'm kinda new to the genre, to be honest... shameful, I know, considering how much I love music.

Edit:

Not new to Floyd. One of my all-time favourite bands. ;)

Looking back at your Jethro reference, it seems we share much musical taste, Cooter-King.

I take my hat off to you. ;)

You must admit, though, that even bands such as Zeppelin and Floyd have been far surpassed by new greats like Kylie Minogue and Craig David.

Rush rocks!

They opened for the Stones last year, for the big SARS concert in Toronto.

An aside, my dad plays golf daily with the dad of the drummer from Rush. (The dad is really old! lol)

Rush is an awesome band.

Limelight from "Moving Pictures" 1981

Living on a lighted stage
Approaches the unreal
For those who think and feel
In touch with some reality
Beyond the gilded cage.

Cast in this unlikely role
Ill-equipped to act
With insufficient tact
One must put up barriers
To keep oneself intact.

Living in the limelight
The universal dream
For those who wish to seem.
Those who wish to be
Must put aside the alienation,
Get on with the fascination,
The real relation,
The underlying theme.

Living in a fisheye lens,
Caught in the camera eye.
I have no heart to lie
I can't pretend a stranger
Is a long-awaited friend.

All the world's indeed a stage
And we are merely players:
Performers and portrayers,
Each another's audience
Outside the gilded cage.
Cynicism -
A philosophy that encourages indifference to social convention and material comforts in order to concentrate on self-knowledge.

I could not stand the lead singer's voice... It annoyed me so much that I could not get passed it and get into the lyrics or the instruments... (my guitar teacher tried and tried...)
