REVIEW 2008: The Year in Weird

Here are some of our highlights from the past year's oddities:

First up, there was heart-warming news of the progress of Dede Koswara, the Javanese man we first met in late 2007, whose mysterious skin condition had left him looking like a tree. Last year, he underwent extensive treatment in hospital, which improved his bark-like skin so much that he announced that he wanted to get married, was able to eat a banana for the first time in years, and eventually ended up not really looking like a tree at all.

Meanwhile, it was also a momentous year for our old hero, Bao Xishun. After losing the title of the world's tallest man in 2007, he reclaimed his crown this year when Ukrainian usurper Leonid Stadnyk refused to be officially measured. To cap a great year for him, he also became the world's tallest dad in October.
