Skinny models

I really, really, really had no idea where to put this! I mean-ok-I'm very skinny too, but this is overreacting! Model agencies should NOT allow this:

I know there are some women who are naturally very skinny, but those look positively unhealthy. I don't think you should be able to count anyones ribs just by looking at a photo.

it saves money on fabric.

the people who make the designs dont want to spend a lot of money on it only for the design to bomb so they get skinny models and save money on the amount of fabric.

also when the model is skinnyer it takes the focous away from her and onto the dress.

they keep themselves like that because they probobl got very poor makrs in exams and dont have much chance of getting another job but to keep that one they must be thin. i admit though some of them just want to be skinny.

most of them have just as much of a problem with it as we do.

Clothes always look better on the hanger. That's the closest they can get a model to one.

Strangely, I find super skinny women quite attractive, though not quite to the degree as shown here.
#1 is reasonable, but the rest are pretty disgusting.

Then again, I find women with a fair bit of meat on them quite attractive too. :dontknow:

I've been following the blog of an anorexic woman on and off for a while now (Not because she's anorexic, but because I like the music she makes), and she's getting progressively ill.
It's quite a strange feeling following a persons self-destruct blog and knowing that you're not going to shake her out of it. It's essentially just waiting for her to learn the hard way, and hoping she doesn't.
What I can't get my head around is her sheer determination to stop eating despite the fact that she can barely hold herself up, even though it's pretty clear she'll never be able to get her weight down to 45kg (Her target weight). Which is so far below her BMI, she'll never reach it before her heart waves the white flag.

I've been tempted to explain the fact that the body has its own parameters of acceptable weight, and it won't go below a certain point and stay there without serious effort, but I can't imagine she'll listen.

I won't post the link as I can't imagine anybody would want to read it. (Neither do I in some respects)
Though it's quite an insight into how a person with an eating disorder thinks, the grim reality that there's a person effectively killing themselves and describing their progress is a quite a slap in the face. :(

I try to look at it from a purely psychological aspect.
It's a shame, she's really quite head strong and talented. :(

Wow, thanks for that FB

As some of you know (but most don't) my 14 year old sister is anorexic. She spent 3 months in the hospital last winter, the first 3 on complete bed rest (flushing the toilet was too much exertion for her heart, and they were scared she'd have a heart attack) Before she was put in the hospital, she was on her exercise bike 10 hours a day, and she said to me at one point that she hated it but couldn't stop herself. Add to that she stopped eating, and she was severely underweight. As your brain starves, you enter a psychosis, and see fat everywhere on your body. She scratched her bony arms till they bled trying to get the "fat" off her. If you've seen The Exorcism of Emily Rose, it will give you an idea of what she was like before hospitalization.

She's much better now, but still has to fight this disease daily. Here's a recent pic:

She's very beautiful. :)

I'm glad she was admitted to hospital before there were any further complications.
Hopefully as she's young, there shouldn't be any long term damage, though being deprived of nutrition for a long time probably had some short term effects, as she's still developing.

She certainly looks healthy in the photograph. :)
Is she still under close watch?

I think anorexia in males has been rather neglected.
It's certainly predominantly young women that suffer from eating disorders, but males are also under a great deal of pressure.
I certainly have times when I feel I should have rock solid abs and testosterone seeping from my pores. It's becoming more widely accepted that women are supposed to have wide hips, more fat and big bums, but I still feel under pressure to get rid of what little fat I have and turn it into muscle. I feel it's expected of me to at least be more toned than I am right now, as it seems that every man has to be reasonably muscular to get within sniffing distance of a woman.
At least from the under 30's.
Thankfully I haven't got the will power to stop eating, but it's crossed my mind every so often.
Though I've chosen to do things the proper way, I find it demeaning that I'm not getting 'instant results'.
Which is another thing wrong with peoples ideals of body image, everything has to be fast and come with minimal effort.
What you don't realise about models is that their days become engulfed with strict diets and hours of exercise.
No alcohol, no late nights, no nothing.

She has beautiful eyes. It's a shame that someone so young can't see the real beauty that they possess. It’s a lot like my youngest son that can’t see what the drugs he uses does to him. Good luck to you, your sister and your family.

Well actualy the same kind of thing happened to a friend of mine i had known since i was maybe 10 or 11.

lots of people picked on her and obviously whenever i tried to stick up for her they would just pick on her more. (usualy because my kind of sticking up for her got me in isolation)

her mother was well not the skinnyest of people and they seemed to think that my friend would react when they called her fat too. i am sorry to say she did.

she stopped eating for a long time and no matter what i did i could not get her to start again. she spent ages at the gym and when they stopped letting her go she just did sit-ups and stuff at home.

last year i went to see her and becuase she had lost some of her mind thanks to the lack of proper nutrition she wasnt thinking straight.

she spent ages looking for pictures of girls on the internet and telling me how she only ever wanted to be like them. then she showed me a picure of a cartoon girl who looked very depressed and she told me that is how she felt. The picture is now my signature (yes the one i have now)

and that was it i never got to see her again and i never will.

well i am soorry you all read that drivel but it fits the theme of the topic.

Yes, she is being watched very closely, she sees a nutritionist every week for weigh in, and a psychiatrist every 2 weeks. If she goes below a certain BMI they will stick her back in the hospital. That is the last place she wants to be so she is constantly trying to stay just at the limit. But she is much better than she was.

Unfortunately, because she was at her developing years, she HAS done permanent damage to her bones from lack of calcium and damaged her heart
............. most likely that will heal with time, but she has to be extra careful when doing cardio exercises.

One of the saddest things about anorexia, or any eating or mental disorder is that it is not just the identified 'victim' who suffers. The whole of their family and friends are also affected and the helplessness that is felt is devastating.

Unfortunately, it is like any addiction and you cannot help someone unless they can recognise they have a problem and want to do something about it. As Sapphire said, it gets to the stage where a form of psychosis sets in and they genuinely see a fat person in the mirror. You can stand two people next to each other, both in the later stages of anorexia, and they will both see the other one as too skinny but themselves as too fat.

Also, like any addiction, it is something that people never recover from. They can spend the rest of their lives as 'recovering' but any stress, upset or loss in their life can set them back again, just like an alcoholic taking that first drink. It is something they always need to be aware of keeping under control.

I have often wondered about your signature, SPoD, and am really sad to hear you lost your friend, but it sounds as if you were a good friend to her.

And Christine, I pray your sister finds the love within herself to be able to overcome her problems. She is a beautiful girl, just like her sister.

That is ashame about your sister sapphire. She is a beautiful girl. But with the love and support of her family, she will get better each and every day.

I found this pic quite awhile ago on the net and decided to save it. Now I know the reason why

yep, that's exactly how they think. I like that pic, because there is a genuine look of almost panic in the girl in the mirror's face. Like she can't believe all her hard work isn't doing any thing to "help"

I've been trying to get pro-ana and pro-mia groups on Facebook shut down. They are groups where anorexics (-ana) and bulimics (-mia) go to cheer each other on. They are vile and disgusting and so harmful. They are everywhere on the internet, but I can't shut them all down :(

Thanks SpoD, I'll make sure to tell her you're creepin' on her from the internet :lmao:

But in all seriousness, the friends I have made on the internet have helped me through this whole ordeal better than my friends close by, I suppose because they are slightly removed from the situation, and can offer unbiased advice.
