Venus fly trap

Postby vivalefrench » 10 Jul 06, 11:43 am

I've always wanted one of these from a young age, and I have finally acquired one. They are freaky as ever!

I couldnt resist the urge to drop a poor defenseless fly into one of the traps to see if it 'worked'. I was expecting the 'jaws' to close quite slowely, but was really shocked when they just sprung shut :o  It is a mad little plant. I will take some photos to show you all.

It is a weird thought of plants eating animals- how taboo.

It dies if you touch it too much to see its mechanism sprung. It uses it only to capture the protein it needs, but if it doesn't get anything, then the trap will not be able to perform as well a couple of times later. The reason that these plants developed was probably because of the local soil they grew in didn't supply enough nutrients so they evolved another way to obtain what they need.
