Millie's brown eyes were as big as a kid in a candy store. Look, Johnny. They were standing in front of the Duck Blind and Johnny had his mind set on shooting all the ducks and winning Millie a big pink bear. Millie had her mind set on something else. She was pointing to the Ferris Wheel. It towered above everything else, above the colorful tents, the bright standards, the shimmering lights, the sideshows, the arcade games, the concession stands, and like a beautiful glittering spinning necklace, it called to Millie. "Can we, Johnny?" she asked.
.
Johnny was already shooting ducks. If there was anything he had learned from the war, it was how to shoot. Ping. Ping. Ping. Three ducks fell. Ping. Ping. Ping. Three more. Ping. Ping. Ping.
.
There, among the lights and the sounds and the intoxicating mixture of smells. Cotton Candy. Funnel Cake. Corn Dogs. Jumbo Pretzel Twists. Elephant Ears. Roasted Corn dripping with warm golden butter. Colorful tents with bright standards flapping in the autumn breeze rising high above the sea of shimmering lights with larger-than-life carnival barkers spinning tales of far off lands with exotic names shrouded in a cloud of mystery and magic. A man with the head of an elephant. A bearded woman. A wolf boy. A mystic who could foresee the future. A sword eater. A snake charmer. A kaleidoscope of weird and strange impossibilities to seduce, shock and amuse.
.
Down they went. Ping. Ping. Ping. Ping. Ping. Ping.
.
"Another winner, folks," the carny yelled out. He reached up and brought down the big pink bear and handed it to Johnny. Then, turned to new targets. Next. "Step right up," he yelled out to the rubes, the marks, the cake eaters passing by.
.
Test your skill. Prove your manhood.
.
Johnny and Millie headed for the spinning jewel in the sky. The Ferris Wheel. The voice of the Duck Blind talker faded quickly, drowned out by an assortment of bells and whistles and explosions and people laughing and giggling and screaming on rides that twirled and spun them, lifted and dropped them, shocked and thrilled them, tossed and turned them, and all the while in the background, the carnival music happily lured them into a world of ever-spinning, never-ending non-stop wonder.
.
.
The Ferris Wheel carriage rocked back and forth. The lights of the carnival and of the town sparkled below them. A sea of lights.
.
And for a brief moment, up there floating above the lights, life was perfect. The way it should be. Millie and Johnny together, in each other's arms, not a care in the world, a sea of possibilities sparkling below.
