John Oliver takes aim at debt collectors in a segment on the bad actors in the collection industry, who buy debt from banks for cents on the dollar then attempt to recoup the debt they bought using threats and other aggressive tactics. Many times they employ these aggressive tactics without first verifying the details or accuracy of the debt. Companies that purchase debt cheaply then collect it aggressively are shockingly easy to start and they prove it by starting a debt collection agency and purchasing delinquent debt.
